Patents and other proprietary rights are important to our business. Our policy is to file patent applications to protect our intellectual property rights. Maxygen seeks patent protection for its product candidates in the U.S. and other selected jurisdictions. MAXY G34 (G-CSF)
Maxygen retains all rights to the MAXY-G34 program for commercial
development of all therapeutic areas, including all rights for
chemotherapy-induced neutropenia and ARS indications.
RECOMBINATION-BASED DIRECTED EVOLUTION TECHNOLOGIES. Maxygen developed what we believe to be the most comprehensive patent portfolio in recombination-based directed evolution technologies for the creation of new and improved protein products, as well as patents for complementary protein modification technologies. Patents owned by us, or for which we have exclusive licenses, cover a broad range of activities surrounding recombination-based directed molecular evolution including: - methods for template-based gene recombination to produce chimeric genes;
- methods for recombining nucleic acid segments produced by incomplete nucleic acid chain extension reactions to produce chimeric genes including the staggered extension process (StEP);
- methods utilizing reiterative screening or only a single cycle of screening;
- methods of combining any mutagenesis technique with DNA recombination methods to produce new chimeric genes;
- methods using synthesized nucleic acid fragments; and
- in vivo and in vitro recombination methods of the above, in a variety of formats.
In October 2010, a subsidiary of Codexis, Inc. acquired substantially all of our patents and other intellectual property rights associated with these recombinant-based directed evolution technologies. As part of the acquisition, we were granted license rights to the acquired intellectual property assets to the extent necessary for us to fulfill our contractual obligations under any license agreements we have retained, such as our license agreement with Perseid, which retains exclusive licenses to use the technology platform for the discovery, research and development of protein pharmaceuticals, and to permit us to practice any retained rights under such agreements.
