Biotech Research Assistant

Maxygen is a biotechnology company located in Sunnyvale, CA focused on providing services in the area of molecular biology and directed evolution. We are searching for an enthusiastic and hands-on individual to fill the role of molecular biology research assistant and is motivated to work in a dynamic startup team.

As a Research Assistant at Maxygen, you should have experience in recombinant DNA techniques (cloning, bacterial transformations, Gibson Assembly, gel electrophoresis, etc.) while demonstrating excellent laboratory techniques, scientific creativity, and ability to adapt in a fast moving and collaborative environment. In addition to these qualifications, the ideal candidate will be highly goal-oriented, pays close attention to detail, with the ability to respond to shifting demands and priorities. Skilled individuals will have an opportunity for increased responsibility and potential growth within the organization.

Salary will range from $45,000 - 60,000 dependent upon experience and compensation includes medical, dental, and vision as well as a flex spending plan, and a matching IRA.


  • Perform a variety of laboratory procedures and tasks, both under guidance and independently.

  • Maintain detailed, accurate records of all experiments performed in a timely fashion.

  • Maintain a clean and organized working environment.

  • Set up workspace and follow guidelines under good laboratory practice.

  • Take inventory of lab materials; order new supplies and equipment when needed


  • Bachelor’s degree in science or related field

  • General understanding of the workings of a lab and fundamental research principles.

  • 2+ years’ experience in a laboratory with molecular biology techniques.

  • Strong desire to work in a fast-paced, collaborative startup environment.

  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral), as well as a commitment to quality.

  • Demonstrates ability to work independently and as part of a team, to meet deliverables.

  • Ability to effectively multi-task and parallel process tasks across multiple work flows.

  • Aptitude for independently solving problems and strategically troubleshooting experiments.
